Why Register
The design of a product and its physical appearance are often important commercial factors. An attractive design will distinguish a product from the products of competitors so that a high premium can be charged.
By registering your design you will stop others from creating products that look too similar to yours. Therefore, as long as your design has individual character, you can register it and have this monopoly right to make any item incorporating your design.
A design registration protects only the appearance of a product, such as the lines, contours, colours, shape, texture and the material of the product.

UK Designs
If you only want your design to be protected in the UK, then a UK Registered Design is a preferred approach.
In one application you can now file many designs for many different products.
This option is more cost effective than applying separately for each of your designs.

European Designs
The second registered right that is available to you is the Community Registered Design, which you apply for in a similar way.
However, even though the multiple applications are still allowed, the designs have to be the same or similar types of products.
This approach to registering a design is popular because protection extends across the whole of the European Union.
